The B Corp Movement and its Success in Italy<\/h2>\n

Intesa is one of the first tech companies in Europe to take a B Lab B Impact Assessment (BIA). What role will technology and digital services play in tackling the major challenges of the 21st century?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The second decade of the 2000\u2019s has seen the emergence of what are being called the most critical issues facing humankind<\/strong>: global warming, rising CO2 levels, water consumption, and worldwide income inequality. These problems are exponential in nature<\/strong>, and in recent years they have been exacerbated to the point they can no longer be ignored. The consequences they generate are extreme, almost inconceivable, and defy conventional linear solutions. To tackle these exponential challenges, we need exponential tools.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Moving toward \u201cStakeholder Capitalism\u201d<\/h3>\n

2020 may well prove the year a turning point is finally reached.<\/strong> Through a series of grassroots movements, from Fridays For Futures to Black Lives Matter, the voices of GenZers (and others) have pierced the board room: according to Fortune Magazine\u2019s most recent survey of 500 international CEOs, there is an ever more pressing need to move toward a kind of stakeholder capitalism*<\/strong>. The shift from a focus on shareholders to a focus on stakeholders means that the world\u2019s environmental and social challenges become problems shouldered by the community and the business world alike.<\/p>\n

Out of this shift comes the concept of a Benefit Corporation, and the B Corp movement<\/strong>. At its base is the idea that all companies are poised to pursue a dual goal: profits along with a positive social and environmental impact. This is a commitment being made by an increasing number of companies across the world, an undertaking that is now recognized and regulated in a number of countries including Italy. To become a B Corp, one must take an impact assessment known as the \u201cB Corp Impact Assessment,\u201d and score at or above 80 points.<\/p>\n

The Situation in Italy<\/h3>\n

Italy has become an international success story for B Corps.<\/strong> Italian companies have secured certification at much higher rates than those in other countries. Italy was also one of the first countries to approve specific legislation to grant status to benefit corporations.<\/p>\n

Why have B Corps become more popular in Italy than in other countries?<\/strong> The explanation most likely can be found within the fabric of our industries, where there is a large share of small-to-mid-size businesses \u2013 companies with a clear mission, duly carried out by the executive team<\/strong>. In that segment, we find ample motivation for tackling broader social and environmental issues. The popularity of B Corps in Italy has set us apart, and may well allow us to overcome some of our socio-economic hurdles, and pave the way for solving even problems that are even more daunting.<\/p>\n

What does sustainability mean in the technological sphere?<\/h3>\n

Intesa is one of the first tech companies in Europe to take the B Impact Assessment.<\/strong> The relationship between technological innovation and social\/environmental sustainability is much closer than one would think. To tackle the exponentiality of this century\u2019s greatest challenges, we need a response that can keep pace with the problem. That response is technology.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Il movimento B Corp e il caso virtuoso dell\u2019Italia<\/h2>

Intesa \u00e8 una delle prime tech company in Europa a sottoporsi al B Impact Assessment (BIA) di B Lab. Quale sar\u00e0 il ruolo della tecnologia e del digitale nelle grandi sfide del secolo?<\/p><\/blockquote>

Il secondo decennio degli anni 2000 \u00e8 stato segnato dall\u2019emergere dei cosiddetti \u201cgrandi temi dell\u2019umanit\u00e0\u201d<\/strong>: l\u2019innalzamento della temperatura, la concentrazione di CO2, il consumo di acqua, le disparit\u00e0 socio-economiche mondiali. Problemi dal carattere esponenziale<\/strong>, che in questi anni si sono aggravati a tal punto da non poter pi\u00f9 essere ignorati e le cui conseguenze creano fenomeni estremi, quasi inconcepibili, che sfuggono all\u2019applicazione di soluzioni lineari. Per affrontare sfide esponenziali, servono strumenti esponenziali.<\/strong><\/p>

Verso lo \u201cstakeholder capitalism\u201d<\/h3>

Oggi, nel 2020, l\u2019ora della risoluzione sembra essere giunt<\/strong>a. Con una spinta \u201cdal basso\u201d, dal movimento studentesco del Fridays For Futures al Black Lives Matter, la voce della GenZ (e non solo) \u00e8 arrivata fino ai vertici delle big companies: secondo l\u2019ultima survey di Fortune a 500 CEOs mondiali, la necessit\u00e0 di spostarsi verso uno stakeholder capitalism \u00e8 ora diventata pi\u00f9 urgente*<\/strong>. L\u2019idea di concentrare l\u2019attivit\u00e0 d\u2019impresa non pi\u00f9 sugli azionisti ma sui portatori di interesse fa s\u00ec che le grandi sfide ambientali e sociali diventino le sfide di tutti, aziende comprese.<\/p>

\u00c8 in questo contesto che nasce il concetto di Benefit Corporation e del movimento B Corp<\/strong>. Alla base vi \u00e8 l\u2019idea che ogni azienda possa perseguire una duplice finalit\u00e0, di profitto ma anche di impatto sociale e ambientale positivo. Un\u2019assunzione di responsabilit\u00e0 a cui stanno aderendo sempre pi\u00f9 aziende di tutto il mondo, riconosciute ufficialmente a livello normativo, anche in Italia. Per diventare una B Corp \u00e8 necessario sottoporsi a una valutazione di impatto, il B Corp Impact Assessment, e raggiungere la soglia degli 80 punti.<\/p>

Il caso italiano<\/h3>

Nell\u2019ambito delle B Corp, l\u2019Italia \u00e8 un vero caso internazionale<\/strong>. Le aziende italiane che stanno ottenendo la certificazione sono molto pi\u00f9 numerose che in altri paesi. Non a caso, l\u2019Italia \u00e8 anche uno dei primi stati ad aver approvato una legge specifica per riconoscere le societ\u00e0 benefit.<\/p>

Perch\u00e9 in Italia le B Corp si stanno diffondendo pi\u00f9 che altrove?<\/strong> La spiegazione si trova probabilmente nel tessuto imprenditoriale, fatto di piccole medie imprese, in cui la mission aziendale \u00e8 chiara e condivisa anche a livello manageriale<\/strong>. Qui si trova la motivazione per affrontare anche temi pi\u00f9 ampi, sociali e ambientali. L\u2019ampia diffusione delle B Corp in Italia \u00e8 un fattore distintivo che pu\u00f2 permetterci di recuperare alcune lacune socio-economiche ed essere precursori di alcuni temi molto importanti.<\/p>

Quale sostenibilit\u00e0 in ambito tecnologico?<\/h3>

Intesa \u00e8 una delle prime aziende tecnologiche in Europa a sottoporsi al B Impact Assessment<\/strong>. Il rapporto tra l\u2019innovazione tecnologica e la sostenibilit\u00e0 sociale e ambientale \u00e8 molto pi\u00f9 stretto di quanto si possa pensare: per affrontare l\u2019esponenzialit\u00e0 delle grandi sfide del secolo, \u00e8 necessaria una risposta che sappia tenere il passo. Questa risposta \u00e8 la tecnologia.<\/strong><\/p>
